Evaluating information accessibility and community adaptivity features for sustaining virtual learning communities

چکیده
Virtual communities have been identified as the ‘‘killer applications’’ on the Internet Information Superhighway. Their impact is increasingly pervasive, with activities ranging from the economic and marketing to the social and educational. Despite their popularity, little is understood as to what factors contribute to the sustainability of virtual communities. This study focuses on a specific type of virtual communities—the virtual learning communities. It employs an experiment to examine the impact of two critical issues in system design—information accessibility and community adaptivity—on the sustainability of virtual learning communities. Adopting an extended Technology Acceptance Model, the experiment exposed 69 subjects to six different virtual learning communities differentiated by two levels of information accessibility and three levels of community adaptivity, solicited their feelings and perceptions, and measured their intentions to use the virtual learning communities. Results indicate that both information accessibility and community adaptivity have significant effects on user perceptions and behavioural intention. Implications for theory and practice are drawn and discussed. r 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

متن کاملActive Participation in Problem Solving Virtual Communities: a Learning Perspective
Active participation of members is considered essential to the success of virtual communities. We incorporated the Adaptive Structuration Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory to propose a conceptual model in explaining active participation in problem solving virtual communities from a learning perspective. In this model, learning orientation and learning expectancy were identified as predictors o...
متن کاملAn Optimized Firefly Algorithm based on Cellular Learning Automata for Community Detection in Social Networks
The structure of the community is one of the important features of social networks. A community is a sub graph which nodes have a lot of connections to nodes of inside the community and have very few connections to nodes of outside the community. The objective of community detection is to separate groups or communities that are linked more closely. In fact, community detection is the clustering...
متن کاملVirtual communities of practice: A study of communication, community and organisational learning
Communities of practice are recognised as important to the social fabric of knowledge (Wenger, 2004), and are described as social structures which enable knowledge to be managed by practitioners. According to Wenger (2004), members of these groups share a passion for something they know how to do, and they regularly interact for the purpose of improving their discipline. More recently in the li...
متن کاملAn Identity-Based Theory of Information Technology Design for Sustaining Virtual Communities
A variety of information technology artifacts, such as those supporting reputation management and digital archives of past interactions, are commonly deployed to support virtual communities. Despite the ubiquity of these artifacts, research on the impact of various IT-based features on virtual community communication is still limited. Without such research, the mechanisms through which informat...
